For Fu Wei, vice president of Jingneng Optoelectronics (Jiangxi) Co., Ltd., returning to China is like “unplugging a thorn in my heart.” Although he lived in a stable and comfortable life abroad, he did not like the days of “working“, so he resolutely returned to China.
He has applied for 2 foreign patents and published more than 30 papers.
In 1998, after graduating from Tsinghua University in materials science and engineering, Fu Yu entered the Institute of Semiconductors of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, specializing in microelectronics and solid state electronics, where he began his indissoluble bond with LED technology. “My master‘s tutor is the first person in China to convert GaN LED from laboratory to production. Under his influence, I first came into contact with LED technology, and I have been doing research in this area since then.” Say.
The fate has already been arranged, you only need to be yourself. This sentence is suitable for use in paying for it. In the four years of the Institute of Semiconductors of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Fu has discovered that LED technology has great research and development space. However, at that time, domestic LED technology research was still very weak. Fuyu chose to go abroad for further study. In 2007, he obtained a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Virginia Commonwealth University.
“Technology research and development can‘t just stay in the school lab, but also develop in practice.” Fu said. In the 7 years after his Ph.D., Fu has joined Xepix, Puri, and Toshiba America Electronic Components. He has served as a technical team member and senior researcher. He has long been responsible for the development and quantity of GaN-based LEDs on 8-inch silicon substrates. The introduction of production, a number of groundbreaking technology upgrades and process improvements, making the large-size silicon substrate route fully mature in production.
Heaven pays for work, and pays always pays off. In many years of foreign studies and practice, Fu has applied for 2 foreign patents, published more than 30 papers, and has 2 book chapters. At present, the light efficiency and production yield of 8-inch silicon substrate LEDs and high-performance sapphire-based LEDs have been flat, which will lay a solid foundation for future LED manufacturing compatible silicon semiconductor processes, towards ultra-large-scale, automated and low-cost manufacturing model evolution. . Innovative breakthrough in epitaxial structure and epitaxial quality optimization of AlGaN/GaN high-speed switching devices on 8-inch silicon substrates, which not only promotes voltage, leakage, current collapse and other parameters of 8-inch silicon substrate AlGaN/GaN high-speed switching devices. Significantly improved, and the high-speed switching device parameter consistency on the 8-inch silicon substrate is fundamentally resolved.
“As a Chinese, we must contribute to China’s development.”
Fu Wei said that as a Chinese, working in American companies, from time to time will be subject to some discrimination, feeling the scorn of the United States on our Chinese technology, these actions have brought me deep touch. “They think that we only have some of the remaining elimination technologies in China. I felt that as a Chinese, we must contribute to China’s development and upgrade our Chinese technology and industry.”
For overseas high-level talents, returning to the country means that everything has to start from scratch. In December 2014, Fu Yi resolutely returned to China and joined Jingneng Optoelectronics (Jiangxi) Co., Ltd. He said, “Chinese people have better opportunities in China.”
“The crystal energy photoelectric rate has achieved the large-scale industrialization of silicon substrate LED technology before the world. Crystal Energy Optoelectronics is my second choice.” Fu Yan said frankly.
“Jingneng Optoelectronics is the entire industrial chain from research and development to mass production and then application.” Fu Wei said, “In the United States, their research and development and application are not out of touch, but in the combination of crystal energy optoelectronics is very close, for technology. Research is more beneficial.”
Join the “crystal energy photoelectric” to break the storm
After returning to China to join Jingneng Optoelectronics, Fu Wei once again innovated and upgraded the technology and repeated iterations. “For silicon substrates, the larger the size, the cheaper it is, but the corresponding production difficulty is also greatly increased, especially in terms of controlling light efficiency and product yield. In order to improve light efficiency and yield, I spent four in the United States. After five years of research, I have done trials no less than a thousand times. I finally mastered the buffer layer technology to improve the light efficiency and control the uniformity of the temperature field to ensure the yield.” Fu said, “The crystal energy at that time can only be achieved. 2 inches, and the light effect is not very good. After I returned to China, I did some work on the upgrade of the size and the improvement of the light performance. At present, the light efficiency has increased by 15% to 20%, and the yield has increased to 90. %. These mean that our products are no longer only able to work in the low-end market, but in the high-end market such as mobile phone flash, car headlights.”
At present, the crystal substrate chip of Jingneng Optoelectronics is mainly made up of 4 inches in size this year, and 6 inches is in the state of research and development. It is planned to realize mass production of 4 inches and 6 inches in the next year, and gradually realize mass production of all 6 inches.
Bringing the country’s independent intellectual property rights to the market, let ‘China Core’ light up the world
“The selection of the ‘Thousand Talents Plan’ is not only an honor, but also a very important responsibility.” As the twelfth batch of national “Thousand Talents Program” innovative talents, Fu Wei said that he will work hard to make large-scale, automated, silicon-based LED chip production. Low cost and high light efficiency have helped Nanchang to build a cluster of LED industrial clusters in Nanchang and change the global LED lighting industry.
Looking forward to the future development of the domestic LED industry, Fu is full of confidence: “I hope to bring our country’s independent intellectual property rights to the market and let the ‘China Core’ light up the world.”
