Micron Technology and Intel today released the latest developments on the 3D Xpoint joint development partnership between the two companies. The two companies jointly developed a new type of non-volatile memory that has significantly reduced latency and significantly improved durability compared to NAND storage.
The two parties agreed to jointly develop the second generation 3D Xpoint technology, which is expected to be completed in the first half of 2019. The development work after the second generation of 3D XPoint technology will be carried out by each of the two companies to optimize the technology for their respective product and business needs.
The two companies will continue to produce 3D Xpoint-based storage products at the Intel-Micron Flash TECHNOLOGIES (IMFT) facility in Lehigh, Utah, USA.
Scott DeBoer, Executive Vice President of Micron Technology Development, said: “Micron has a long history of innovation in storage technology development and 40 years of world-leading expertise, and we will continue to drive the next generation of 3D Xpoint technology. We are based on this advanced technology. The development of the product is exciting, this technology allows our customers to take advantage of the unique memory and storage capabilities. By independently developing 3D Xpoint technology, Micron can optimize this technology based on our product roadmap while taking care of customers. And the biggest gain from shareholders.”
Rob Crooke, senior vice president and general manager of Intel’s Non-Volatile Storage Solutions Group, said: “With strong customer support, Intel has provided a broad portfolio of Optane products to the customer and data center markets and has achieved leadership. The direct connection between Optane and the world‘s most advanced computing platforms has resulted in breakthrough results for IT and customer applications. We plan to maintain this momentum by combining our high-density 3D NAND technology to expand our lead in Optane. Today‘s computing and storage needs provide the best solution.”
